How Durable is Powder Coating?

How Durable is Powder Coating?

Stronger than Paint, Stress and Impact Resistant

The durability of powder coat for metal parts is legendary and has stood the test of time, as well as enduring the most stressful and corrosive environments.

There are three basic steps to powder coating. The metal part must  be cleaned so that no rust, oil, or other contaminants are present. Using a spray gun, an electrostatic powder is applied to the surface of the part. The coated part is then baked in an oven to produce one of the most durable and attractive finishes known to industry.

The process is usually completed in batches, with a number of parts cleaned, racked, powder coated, and baked to a finish in one run.

Examples of Powder Coating Durability

Powder coating passes high impact and high stress events. When properly applied, powder coating stands up to the roughest handling, including pounding with a hammer, being run over by a car, or drilling through the material.

At Great Dane Powder Coating, we have even provided powder coating for industrial guard rails and their components, installations meant to take a beating in warehouse use and on factory floors.

In all these cases, powder coating endures the stress better than paint. It is even possible to bend  a powder coated extrusion or metal part without significant damage to the powder coat, with the powder coating doing its best to stretch along with the material.

None of these harsh treatments are recommended in normal operation, but they do demonstrate the incredible resilience of a powder coated finish.

Powder coating also stands up to corrosive environments, both in natural weathering environments (such as saltwater) and industrial facilities (standing up to gasoline, oil, battery acid, and more).

Flammability

Paints can be flammable, even when dry. Oil-based paints are flammable when wet. Latex, acrylic and water-based paints become combustible after drying.

Is powder coating flammable? Once baked onto a metal substrate, powder coating is non-flammable. More than that, powder coating provides a heat resistant and fire-resistant surface.

If caught in a fire, powder coated components generate a low density of low toxicity smoke. This is because powder coating contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Powder coated surfaces can withstand temperatures up to 550 degrees Celsius (over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit).

Powder Coating Offers Many Advantages

Powder coating is chosen for many applications because it provides the temperature, corrosion, and chemical resistance needed across a range of manufacturing operations. Benefits include:

  • A completely uniform and consistent coating with high durability.
  • Powder coatings looks great and lasts for decades.
  • Durable powder coating is scratch, chip, and flake resistant.
  • Appliance coatings using powder coat can be anti-microbial, stain resistant, and even finger-print resistant.
