Care & Maintenance of Powder Coated Products
Powder coating has proven its worth in delivering a lasting, durable finish of the kind demanded by parts manufacturers and industrial fabricators.
At Great Dane Powder Coating, Inc., we offer the professional service industry turns to for their high-volume powder coating needs. What do we tell our clients when it comes to helping powder coats last for 15 to 20 years?
- Follow the advice of your powder coater when it comes to choosing the right resin, color, and thickness for your application. Outdoor uses are under stress from UV solar rays, air pollutants, and acid rain.
- Powder coated items should be cleaned occasionally with mild detergent soap and water. Harsh chemicals and solvents are unnecessary and can damage the finish.
- Use a wet sponge or a soft, non-abrasive bristle brush to loosen stubborn dirt.
Cleaning powder coated items a few times a year is sufficient to keep them looking their best for many years.
Polishing a Powder Coated Surface
In the care of powder coats, auto paint provides a good analogy. You wouldn’t use harsh chemicals or a stiff brush on your car’s paint job, and you shouldn’t apply strong-arm cleaning methods to powder coated products either.
Yes, automobile wax can be used on powder coated parts and objects. Apply the wax and buff it gently to help in resorting the powder coat’s initial shine.
Dealing with Minor Damage and Graffiti
Is it possible to repair scuffing and chipping in the field? Industrial guardrails, bollards, post bases, and similar applications are often in the line of fire, accumulating damage from vehicles, shopping carts, skateboards, and more.
Sandpaper can be used to gently scuff the damaged surface and a small surrounding area, removing dirt, grease, and rust. Then apply an exterior metal primer, sealing the exposed surface. A color enamel can be added once the primer dries, though an exact color match is unlikely.
Extensive damage will require recoating or replacement.
Removing graffiti from powder coat can be tough. Look for biodegradable sprays specially made for removing graffiti. When applying any spray or chemical to a powder coated surface, work in small areas. Work in an area you can rinse and wipe dry within 30 seconds after applying the cleaner.
With proper care and maintenance, powder-coated products withstand years to decades of service with minimal wear and corrosion in most North American environments.
