Can Fiberglass be Powder Coated?

Can Fiberglass be Powder Coated?

Powder coating delivers a long-lasting, durable coat to a variety of manufactured parts and industrial products. An affordable, environmentally friendly process, powder coating relies on the electrostatic attraction between the powder spray and the part it is to adhere to.

This process works well on ferrous metals, galvanized steel, and even aluminum. When it comes to other substances, there are two challenges:

  • A proper ground must be established for the part being powder coated so that it can adequately attract the electrostatically charged powder.
  • The part must be able to endure the oven curing process— from 10 to 30 minutes at temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Manufactured items that can’t be powder coated include rubber, plastic, wood, and any fabricated piece to which the spray powder would not adhere, or that would melt during the during the oven curing process.

What about fiberglass?

First, special techniques have been developed to create an electrostatic attraction between fiberglass and powder coat sprays, allowing the resin particles to adhere to the fiberglass surface.

Secondly, fiberglass is, in general, up to the challenge of oven curing, but care must be taken. The word “fiberglass” covers a range of resin and polyester laminate formulations, with different properties in flexibility, durability, and conductivity.

What Fiberglass Parts are Typically Powder Coated?

Powder coated fiberglass window fenestrations have become popular in recent years. Window framing lends itself to an assembly line process, and powder coating provides not only a durable, weather resistant finish, but also a wide range of colors that window manufacturers can offer to their customers.

Powder coating has been applied to a variety of manufactured fiberglass products, from hunting and fishing equipment to composite bows, boating and automotive panels, parts, and fiberglass springs.

Today, powder coating is not restricted to metal parts, but exceptional results are always achieved when you work with experienced hands. At Great Dane Powder Coating, LLC, we have the expertise, history, and reputation to deliver the results you’re looking for.
