Controlling Film Thickness in Electrocoating

E-Coating a Top Choice for Manufacturers

Electrophoretic coating, also known as e-coating or electrocoating, is one of the most popular paint finishing methods among industrial manufacturers worldwide.

E-coating is perfect for applying a corrosion-resistant coating to parts with tight tolerances, as the process allows for precision control of each film’s thickness.

Through a “wet” dipping method, Great Dane Powder Coating, Inc. easily coats parts of all shapes, sizes, and materials without the expense of intense manual labor. Commonly e-coated materials include:

  • Cold and hot rolled steel
  • Galvanized steel or stainless steel
  • Iron or zinc castings
  • Copper or brass
  • Chrome plating
  • Aluminum extrusions
  • And many more!

Precision Control Makes for Easy Production

Once the parts are lowered into an electrophoretic bath, a current is applied and positively charged paint particles in solution become attracted to the negatively charged pieces being coated. That attraction forms an even, continuous film over every surface, reaching into every nook and cranny.

Depending on the application, coating thickness can be within the tolerance of mated parts, making part masking unnecessary.

When the coating reaches the desired, even thickness, the film insulates the part and e-coating is complete. This environmentally friendly process results in an extremely chemical —and corrosion— resistant finish for all Great Dane projects.
