Great Dane Powder Coating partnered with the Town of Ligonier to restore the historic welcome sign along Route 30 eastbound. Years of Pennsylvania weather had taken their toll. Our team gave the sign new life through professional surface preparation and a durable powder-coated finish built for the seasons ahead.
Why did the sign need a new finish?
Outdoor signage takes a beating in western Pennsylvania. Sun, snow, road salt, and hard temperature swings work on a finish year after year. Color fades. Coatings chip and lift at the edges. Once bare metal is exposed, rust follows. The Ligonier welcome sign had been greeting drivers on Route 30 for years, and it showed. Restoring a landmark like that is not only about appearance. A failing finish opens the door to corrosion, and corrosion is what turns a repair into a replacement.
Why does powder coating suit outdoor signage?
Powder coating is a strong fit for signs that live outdoors. A charged dry powder is applied to the prepared metal, then heat cures it into a hard, uniform film. That film resists chipping, scratching, and UV fading better than liquid paint. It holds its color through years of sun and weather. It also lays down evenly across letters, edges, and detail work, with no drips or runs. For a sign that has to read clearly from a moving car, that consistency is the whole point.
A project close to home
Great Dane coats parts for manufacturers across the eastern seaboard. Caterpillar, Manitowoc Cranes, and Spartan Motors are all on our list. This job was a different kind of work. Loyalhanna is our home and Ligonier is our neighbor, so putting our plant and our people behind a local landmark was a privilege.
